I am honored to represent the Ministry of Transport at this inception workshop on the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Project.

I bring you greetings from my boss, Hon. Minister Sirleaf Ralph Tyler, who regrets his absence today due to pressing commitments.

The inception workshop on the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Project is significant because it brings together distinguished personalities, global bodies, and the Environmental Protection Agency, a vital institution that safeguards our environment and natural habitat.

Moreover, it is crucial because we are gathered to discuss the global status of the carbon market and how Liberia can contribute to the reduction of carbon emission and benefit from this emerging trend in addressing climate change.

As a nation, it is essential that we join global partners in this urgent agenda. The alarming climate changes we are witnessing – record-breaking storms, devastating floods, and unprecedented temperature increases – emphasize the need for swift action. The proposed carbon market mechanism presents an opportunity for Liberia to capitalize on global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development, ultimately improving the lives of our citizens.

The Ministry of Transport recognizes the importance of coordinated efforts from various sectors and stakeholders to achieve this goal. As a sector driving economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability in Liberia, we have been actively promoting sustainable clean transport practices. 
For instance, we have concluded the feasibility study for the Transport-Maritime Waterway Project for Monrovia, which aims to establish alternative routes and reduce emissions within the sector. We have also launched initiatives such as Leapfrogging to E-Mobility Acceleration Partnership and Zero Emission Vehicles Policy Development Project to promote electric and alternative fuel vehicles.

The Ministry of Transport urges other global partners present here today to expedite their efforts in addressing climate change. We recognize that time is of the essence; we cannot afford to delay our actions. The window for effective action is closing rapidly.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Transport is committed to supporting this initiative and looks forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to create a sustainable future for our country, Africa and by extension the rest of the world. A harmonized approach will enable us to leverage the benefits of this mechanism and make a meaningful contribution to global efforts to combat climate change.
