Ministry of Transport to Install 25 Giant-size Traffic Lights and 100 Cameras to Enhance Road Safety in Monrovia

Monrovia, May 6, 2025 – In a major leap toward modernizing Liberia’s traffic management system, the Ministry of Transport has announced the upcoming installation of 25 state-of-the-art traffic lights and 100 high-tech traffic cameras across key intersections in Monrovia and surrounding areas.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport, Honorable Sirleaf Ralph Tyler, during a high-level meeting held at the Ministry's headquarters on Wednesday, May 6, 2025. The meeting brought together senior members of the Ministry’s leadership team and representatives from the contracted companies responsible for executing the project.
Minister Tyler disclosed that the project is being implemented through a partnership between a Liberian-owned company and a reputable foreign technology firm based in Turkey. This collaborative initiative is designed to significantly improve traffic regulation, ease vehicular congestion, and bolster road safety efforts in and around the capital city.
Speaking during a live PowerPoint presentation, the Turkish technical delegation emphasized that the traffic lights and cameras will be strategically installed at 25 of Monrovia’s busiest intersections. The advanced traffic cameras will be equipped with license plate recognition technology, enabling authorities to identify and track drivers who violate traffic rules.
“These installations will help control the overwhelming movement of vehicles between destinations, ensuring safer, more organized roads for drivers and pedestrians alike,” the Turkish expert noted.
To support real-time monitoring and enforcement, the equipment will be connected to a central control hub via monitors installed on various GSM towers throughout Monrovia and its environs. This network will feed live data to the Ministry of Transport’s control base, ensuring continuous oversight of road activities.
Additionally, the control center will be jointly operated by officers from the Liberia National Police, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Public Works, and other relevant government institutions. Their round-the-clock monitoring will help enforce traffic laws and respond swiftly to road incidents.
This initiative marks a significant step toward transforming Liberia’s road safety landscape and bringing the country closer to international standards in urban traffic management.
