Monrovia: Friday, February 19, 2021: In the wake of  increase in the rate of motor accidents in the country,The Government of Liberia through the Road Safety Secretariat (RSS) which comprises of the Ministries of Transport, Public Works, Education, Justice/LNP and Health stationed at the Ministry of Transport  has completed the Second Phase of its Road Safety Awareness and Sensitization campaign under the theme: “No Need to Speed” which was launched from February 7-19, 2021 in Bong, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Cape Mount counties respectively aimed at providing road safety education for drivers, motorcyclists, tricyclists, pedestrians, marketers, students, workers among others to help reduce the alarming rate of motor accidents across the country.  

During the conduct of the awareness campaign, the RSS conducted stakeholder’s meetings and Trainers-of-Trainers (TOT) workshops to help educate drivers, community dwellers, students, local authorities, and marketers, leadership of transport unions and school authorities in the counties, as well as streets promotion, the distribution of brochures / flyers, printed T-shirts and the posting of stickers respectively.

It can be recalled that in October 2018, the President of Liberia, His Excellency George M. Weah launched the road safety program at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for implementation. The program is a 5-year project with various pillars and funding from the World Bank and the African Development Bank. In November 2019, the Secretariat initiated the road safety public awareness campaign in Nimba, Bong and Margibi counties but was interrupted by the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.

Local Government officials including transport stakeholders, the local based media and the general public are expected to grace these occasions in the various counties.
