Monrovia, Wednesday, July 15, 2015: A 5-man delegation from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the United States Department of Transportation/VOLPE National Transportation Systems Center on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 held a meeting with the Minister of Transport, Hon. Angela Cassell Bush at her Broad Street Offices.
In her welcome remarks, Minister Cassell Bush expressed profound gratitude for the visit of the MCC. She further briefed the team about current efforts being made by the MOT in keeping with the Ministry’s agenda for transformation. She outlined some of the Transport Sector Reform priority intervention areas to include the following:
1. Axle Load Control Management
2. Road Safety Management
3. Vehicle Registration and Driver Licensing
4. Transport Sector Institutional Reform
5. Development of Inland waterway Transport and Domestic Air Transport Industry and Urban Transport Management.
However, the MCC Team headed by Mr. Bryant Collins informed Minister Bush and staff of the Ministry of Transport that the main purpose of MCC’s investments in Liberia’s transport sector is to develop and implement a sustainable long term approach to road maintenance. According to Mr. Collins, the key components of the MCC proposed support are:
1. Pilot Demonstration of road maintenance centers;
2. Road Network inventory and Analysis;
3. New Road maintenance processes and procedures, planning techniques, and regulatory reforms; and
4. An Asset Management Plan for the national road network.
In addition, MCC proposes to assist the GoL to conduct an urban transportation planning study for Greater Monrovia to guide future transportation investments in the fast growing metropolitan area.
On behalf of MCC, the U.S. Department of Transportation Center (VOLPE) will work cooperatively with the GoL to undertake these activities.
