Monrovia: Monday, May 11, 2015: Consistent with the tradition of Government via an established policy of the Civil Service Agency (CSA), the Ministry of Transport on Friday, May 8, 2015, honorably retired 14 of its employees.
Speaking at the well attended program held in the conference room of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on UN Drive, Transport Minister, Angela Cassell Bush lauded the retirees for their enormous contributions toward their country over the years. She said even though the occasion is sad, it is equally joyous in that honorable retirement is a blessing which affords civil servants the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of their labor while alive. She called on the retirees not to view retirement as an end to their lives but a period that will permit each of them to venture into other undertakings for the improvement of their lives. She thanked them for their meritorious services to the Ministry of Transport in particular and Liberia at large and wished them well in their future endeavors.
Madam Wanneh Clarke Reeves, Deputy Director General for Human Resource-Designate for the Civil Service Agency who deputized for CSA Director General-Designate, Dr. Leona Puchu Bernard, extolled the retirees for their achievements. She said honorable retirement is an established policy of Government which is an appreciation for one’s dedicated services rendered his/ her country over the years. She emphasized that to make retirement more attractive, the current leadership at the CSA has decided to hire a pension consultant who will be charged with the responsibility of doing a holistic review of Government’s Pension Program and make recommendations that will facilitate informed decision making for retirees to get attractive retirement benefits. She commended the retirees for their sacrifices over the years and wished them success. She later presented the Certificates of Honor and Cash Pension Package to each retiree.
The Deputy Director General of the National Social Security & Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP), Mr. Nya Twayen who represented NASSCORP Director-General, Dewitt Vonbalmoos explained the role of NASSCORP when it comes to the payment of Social Security benefits to retirees. He emphasized that the eligibility for NASSCORP benefits is 60 years and urged those who have not obtained this age requirement to wait until they reach it before their benefits can be processed. He congratulated the retirees for their respective roles played over the years and stressed that it was now time for them to enjoy the benefits of their labour.
Earlier, in welcome remarks, Acting Deputy Minister for Administration/Insurance, Hon. Nickey D. Jah said that honorable retirement is a blessing which each civil servant must cherish. She also thanked the retirees for their tireless services to Liberia.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Mr. Francis Aire-Youba, Outgoing Director of Personnel expressed happiness for the occasion. He however expressed regrets that current pension benefits are negligible. He therefore appealed to the Government of Liberia to consider working out an appreciable pension program that will yield attractive pension benefits to retirees.
Pension in Government takes into consideration the following conditions:
Service in Government for 25 years and above;
65 years of age and above; and
Prolonged illness
