Monrovia, Tuesday, March 3, 2015: The Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Angie Brooks International Foundation Center (ABIC) on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 dedicated a hand washing polytank to motorcyclists on 20th Street, Sinkor. The tank contains 500 gallons of chlorinated water. Some Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) were also distributed to motorcyclists.
In brief remarks, Deputy Transport Minister for Administration and Insurance, Hon. Bushuben M. Keita, who deputized for Transport Minister, Angela Cassell Bush, urged the motorcyclists to take responsibility and maintenance of the hand washing polytank and prevent it from damage. He urged the motorcyclists to unite and find a possible means to ensure the availability of chlorinated water into the tank at all times for washing hands. The Deputy Transport Boss stressed that the Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Angie Brooks International Foundation Center and with the support of the UNDP, has installed 20 hand washing polytanks in strategic areas in Montserrado County aimed at fighting the spread of the deadly Ebola virus disease.
In his dedicatory remarks, the UNDP Assistant Country Director for Sustainable Economic Transformation, Dorsla Farcarthy pledged his institution’s continual support to the Government and people of Liberia. He said that the dedication of the polytank to motorcyclists is part of UNDP’s programs to help fight the spread of the ebola virus disease. He disclosed that plans are underway to extend similar project to commercial drivers.
The Administrator of the Angie Brooks International Foundation Center, Madam Jackie McCay, for her part, said the dedication of the polytank is a project designed with the support of the UNDP to help fight the spread of Ebola in the transport sector. “Besides the prevention of Ebola, washing hands is a hygienic practice”, she stressed. She appealed to the motorcyclists to take advantage and make maximum use of the project by the regular washing of hands against Ebola.
Speaking on behalf of the motorcyclists, Eric Kollie extended special thanks and appreciation to the Ministry of Transport, the UNDP and Angie Brooks International Foundation Center for the installation of the polytank. He promised that it will be used for the intended purpose.
It can be recalled that the Ministry of Transport in partnership with the ABIC and UNDP conducted a one-day Training of Trainers workshop on December 30, 2014 for motorcyclists at the Monrovia City Hall under the theme:”Transporting the People and not the virus”. During the Workshop, adherence to preventive measures against Ebola was emphasized to motorcyclists.
