Monrovia, Thursday, October 9, 2014: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 donated two land cruiser jeeps to the Early Warning System Project (EWS) at the Ministry of Transport. The vehicles were donated purposely for the implementation of the Project’s programs designed to prevent weather and climate change disasters.
In a brief turnover statement, Madam Nessie Golakai-Gould, Assistant Resident Representative for Operations at UNDP, who represented the UNDP Country Director, Dr. Kamil Kamaludden, said the donation of the vehicles is consistent with UNDP’s commitment in ensuring that climate change and weather forecasts are prioritized by both Government and the International Community. She said the donation of the vehicles is part of UNDP’s efforts to empower the Early Warning System Project Team to discharge its duties as it relates to whether and climate data collections and prevention of national disasters. Continuing, Madam Golakai-Gould emphasized the significance of the work of the Early Warning System Project. She intoned that the UNDP in collaboration with the Government of Liberia will fully support the Project to discharge its meteorological and hydrological duties.
Receiving the vehicles on behalf of the Early Warning System Project, Deputy Transport Minister for Administration & Insurance, J.Levi Demmah, who deputized for the Minister of Transport, Hon. Angela Cassell Bush, in a joyful mood expressed special thanks and appreciation to the UNDP Family for the kind donation and assured that the vehicles will be used for the intended purpose. He described the donation as “significant and timely” which he said will buttress Government’s efforts to help in the observation, monitoring and prevention of whether and climate change disasters.
The Early Warning System Project (EWS) was officially launched on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at a local hotel Monrovia. The Project which operates under the umbrella of the Ministry of Transport is chiefly responsible to provide weather and climate information services to key sectors such as: environment, health, energy, water resources, transport (land, air and sea), agriculture and disaster risk reduction, as well as daily weather forecasts to the general public.
The 4-year EWS Project is a climate change adaptation project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) for climate change adaptation. It is one of the three priority climate change adaptation projects identified by the Government of Liberia in 2007 through its National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) which was submitted to GEF for possible funding. The process was spearheaded by Liberia’s National Focal Institution, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Project is being implemented by the United Nations Development Program
in collaboration with Government of Liberia the.
The program which was held on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the UNDP’s Compound at Mamba Point brought together hierarchy of the UNDP Family, Government Officials and the Media.
